Malaysia SIM & eSIM Cost

Pick your trip length, daily data needs and whether you're going to Borneo. This tool compares the four major Malaysian telcos' tourist packs against Airalo/Ubigi/Holafly eSIMs so you don't overspend on data or end up dead-air in Sabah.

What this solves

Tourist SIMs in Malaysia are cheap — RM25–RM40 buys a week of 30+ GB. eSIMs from Airalo/Ubigi are convenient if your phone supports them but typically 2–3x the price per GB. The catch is Borneo: eSIMs that say "Malaysia" often cover Peninsular only, leaving you offline the moment you cross to Sabah or Sarawak.

This tool weighs cost against coverage to give you the right pick, including the "buy two SIMs" trick if you need both Peninsular convenience and Borneo depth.

FAQ

Can I buy a SIM at the airport?

Yes — KLIA, KLIA2 and Penang airport have telco counters. Slightly more expensive than downtown stores but convenient. Bring your passport.

Which telco is best for Borneo?

Celcom/Digi have the widest rural Borneo coverage. Hotlink (Maxis) is good in cities. Yes is cheapest but worst rural coverage.

Can I use WhatsApp/calls with a tourist SIM?

Yes. WhatsApp works on data. Voice calls via the dialer work for incoming but outgoing requires online activation with passport. International calls cost extra.
