Monsoon Window Planner
Malaysia has two monsoon coasts that flip your trip upside down. Showing up at Perhentian in November means the resort is closed. Showing up at Langkawi in August means daily afternoon thunderstorms. Pick a month and a coast — we'll show you what's open, what's risky and what's perfect.
Pick your trip month
What this solves
Malaysia is two weather countries, not one:
- NE monsoon (Nov–March): heavy rain on east coast (Kelantan, Terengganu, Perhentian, Redang, Tioman). West coast (Langkawi, Penang) is dry.
- SW monsoon (May–Sept): heavy rain on west coast. East coast is at its peak season (May–August).
- Inter-monsoon (Apr, Oct): brief transitions with mixed weather.
Plus Borneo (Sabah/Sarawak) follows its own pattern — closer to year-round rain with two slightly drier windows (June–August, January–March).
How to read results
- Peak: the best 6–8 weeks for that coast. Book resorts in advance.
- Good: workable. Some days great, some showery. Discounts possible.
- Risky: expect rain half the days. Outdoor plans need backup.
- Closed: ferries may not run, resorts shut, swimming unsafe. Don't book.
Limitations
- Monsoon timing shifts 2–3 weeks year-to-year. Always verify with Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia).
- Climate change is extending shoulder seasons — "open" months are getting wetter.
- Borneo is its own climate; the tool gives a rough guide but always check Semporna/Kuching forecasts for your specific dates.
FAQ
When is the driest month overall?
Peninsular: February on east coast, July on west coast. There's no single "driest" because the coasts alternate.
Can I dive in monsoon season?
Some operators run year-round but visibility drops to 5-10m (vs 20-30m in dry season). Currents stronger. Most recreational divers avoid monsoon.
What about haze season?
Different from monsoon — see our Haze/PSI tool. Typically Aug-Oct from Indonesian forest fires.
